DNA for Genealogy

Learn more about how to use your DNA test results to extend your family tree, solve tough research problems, and break through brick walls. These courses are for family history enthusiasts who aren’t sure what to do with their DNA test results; professional genealogists seeking to learn more about using DNA in their client work; and anyone interested in learning more about how to use DNA testing in collaboration with traditional genealogical research.

There are two “DNA for Genealogy” courses: Basics and Beyond the Basics.

For each course, there are two attendance options: In-Person and Virtual. The in-person courses will take place at the Rutgers University Inn & Conference Center in New Brunswick, New Jersey. Virtual attendees will be able to view the presentations, hear the presenters, ask questions, and hear responses to others’ questions.

Basics Course (March 23-24, 2019)

The DNA for Genealogy: Basics course will start from the very beginning, and will cover the fundamentals of DNA testing; each of the DNA testing company’s websites, tools, and features; in-depth details on working with DNA matches; and the different types of methodologies used to work with DNA test results.

Beyond the Basics Course (March 30-31, 2019)

The DNA for Genealogy: Beyond the Basics course is a more advanced course for people who have experience working with DNA test results or have taken the Basics course. The course will cover methodologies for working with matches to solve problems; using GedMatch; targeted testing plans; organizing DNA test results and information; proving conclusions using genetic evidence; and ethics and privacy considerations.

About the Instructor

The course is taught by Melissa Johnson, CG. Melissa Johnson is a Certified Genealogist and a professional genealogist, writer, lecturer and educator. She specializes in New Jersey research, and works with DNA test results to solve difficult research problems, break through brick walls, identify ancestral origins, and resolve unknown parentage cases. Melissa is an instructor and course coordinator at several genealogical institutes and is on the faculty of the Boston University Genealogical Research Program. Her work has been published in numerous genealogical journals and magazines.
